About Okra Labs

The hard yards of building growth companies to help you build yours

Why we started Okra Labs

Even in the best of times, scaling growth companies is a monumental challenge, and fraught with so many hard questions:

  • What is the actual work we need to do to hit our growth goals?

  • What are KPIs that really matter?

  • How do we drive accountability and focus across the organization?

  • How do we work more effectively as a team?

  • What should our meeting and communication structures look like?

  • How do we recruit, train & keep the best people?

There’s countless blog posts, books to read, and podcasts to listen to - but the hard part is that every company’s context is unique, with its own mix of product, culture & talent. And what’s been hard as become a lot harder as our work environments have become more distributed.

Ben Horowitz wrote “The Hard Thing About Hard Things” to cut through the noise of traditional management books, so rarely written by the entrepreneurs who’d actually built companies.

I created Okra Labs for the same reason: there's no shortage of consultants, coaches and advisors in the growth company ecosystem.

But how many have a system and approach based on the hard yards of building global companies from garage-to-exit, hiring hundreds, reorganizing and reshuffling global teams, leading pandemic-era pivots, iterating on countless planning cycles - and learned what works and what doesn't?

There's never been a better time to build the future. We'd love to support your company on the journey.

About our founder

Hi, I'm Evan.

I have experience in every phase of the startup journey, from founding thru exit & integration.

For the past 10 years I’ve started, scaled, sold, restructured, and pivoted high growth, globally distributed businesses.

This included onefinestay, a managed marketplace for homesharing that was acquired for $200m in 2016; and Context Travel, an educational experiences business where I led a pandemic-era pivot.

Prior to building companies I worked for nearly 10 years as a growth equity investor and technology investment banker.

I’ve thought deeply about the role of the CEO and personal effectiveness. My approach combines the hard and soft: highly focused, data-driven, metrics-led combined with the softness of managing and supporting people on their journeys, and creating team & individual accountability.
